San Antonio Saints
Thursday, September 1st, 2005We may have seen the last game in New Orleans for the Saints.
Owner Benson has been promising, threatening, hinting, begging for a new stadium or massive upgrades to the now-outdated Superdome. The idea of tapping the disinterested Los Angeles market has been mentioned on more than one occasion as has remembering the Alamodome in San Antonio.
WIth the Katrina destruction in New Orleans it’s nearly impossible that a game will be played in the Superdome this season. Logistically, playing at LSU’s home dorm wil be difficult and that field gets torn up bad enough as it is. With so much storm damage around it might be even worse.
The Saints will likely play their season ‘home’ opener in San Antonio – they may never return.
Without a viable stadium to come home to the digs in Texas might seem very palaltable. Instantly improved rivalries with the Texans and Cowboys might be more than Benson can stomach.
The City of New Orleans will have to convince him to bring back the team, a team he’s already threatened to take out the door and, due to the disaster, a team that now already has one leg en route west.
