NFL coaches on the butcher block.
Friday, September 16th, 2005What NFL coaches are in trouble? Which ones should be?
Mike Shanahan… he won with the best QB ever, hasn’t won since. The team’s draft picks have been woeful. No stars, no marquee names. Bad playcalling, bad decisions.
MIke Holmgren. Considered super smart up North he goes North again to the AFC then NFC West with Seattle and general manages a team into perpetual purgatory. These Seattle teams always look good on paper…and finish within a game of .500. Going 9-7 and losing the wild card game every year might be okay for Cleveland or Arizona since they’ve both stunk lately but if you have the dreaded curse of potential this won’t cut it.
What do they have in common? They are both coaches =and= GMs. Is that the issue? Maybe it’s time for Gary Kubiak to take over as the Broncos Head Coach. It’s tough enough to coach an NFL team – is it really necessary to be so controlling and anal as to manage everything in the organization right down to the flavor of sports drink on the sideline?
Here’s every offensive play for Denver. 4 wide receivers, running back goes in motion to make 5 receivers and Jake Plummer throws the ball to one player who happens to be the one who went 4 yards and turned around. Every play, every series. This team needs a serious infusion of imagination – Kubiak might be exactly that.
